Waylan is a fucking moron, I've decided.

(paraphrased and translated into English)
Me: I'll be in northern Costa Rica until July 4th. Do you think you would be able to make it down to see me?
Waylan: Maybe, I'll get back to you soon.
He never got back to me. And then today, on July 5th, he emails me again and says, "I planned a surfing trip to Costa Rica on July 10th, let's get together then!"

Boys are dumb. On the bright side, I just unpacked and realized that my green dress still smells of cologne and Cerveza.

I have been listening to Andrew Bird's Fake Palindromes on repeat for the past twenty-five minutes. Everyone should go download that song, because I really just can't turn it off.

Also, I had a job interview at Crabtree & Evelyn today, and it went well! They're going to check my references, and assuming those are all fine, I'll start work next week. I can so handle getting paid to smell body lotions and perfume all day.

Pura Vida

Jul. 3rd, 2006 | 09:50 pm

Tomorrow morning I will be on a plane back to Boston.
I mean, I love you all, and part of me is certainly glad to be going back, but I seriously love everything about this place. I´m just really happy here.

I didn´t get to see Waylan, but I did meet a boy in Caño Negro. The short story is that I now know that the hottest thing a guy can do is teach you to dance merengue while whispering in your ear that you are beautiful. Clearly I have a Central American boy complex -- why can´t Northern boys be like that?

Anyway, I´ll be in Newton by tomorrow night. Call me!

Costa Rica is freaking amazing. Right now I´m at a youth hostel in San Jose, but for the past week I have been in Caño Negro, which is a small village about 5 hours from San Jose and 15 minutes from the Nicaraguan border. Tomorrow I head back up there to do another week of service, and I am completely psyched.

So far I have swum next to a cayman, learned how to salsa dance (Puchi happens to be an incredible dancer), taken a cruise ship to La Isla Tortuga, patrolled the river for poachers, mixed cement to build a sidewalk for the new ecological laboratory, painted Caño Negro´s community center, been hit on by Henry the artist, rode horseback through the rainforest, and made some incredible friends.
Oh, and my mother´s camera hates me and deleted about 150 of my pictures today, so my collection will be severly lacking. Sorry, guys. Hopefully I will make up for it next week.

I don´t think I will ever get sick of eating gallo pinto, ceviche, and fresh fruit.

More later, because there is a gigantic line of people waiting for me to get off the computer. Hope everything is going well in the states!

I'm leaving for Costa Rica in less than two days, and I am So. Freaking. Excited. I will take a thousand pictures, possibly see my adorable Nica, and do community service with Puchi for two weeks in the most beautiful country in the world. What could be better?
Want to be super cool and write me a plane letter? ablaufer@vassar.edu

I love that in the past two days I have gone shopping 3 times, square danced, watched Kiki twice, slept for a total of 5 hours, baked 2 cakes, and done zero packing.

And if you are the person who smashed into my car while it was parked in Newton Centre last night, broke the side view mirror right off, and conveniently forgot to leave a note, then I'm pretty pissed. So are my parents.

With prom and graduation done with, I am officially finished with high school.

10. Days. I kind of forgot to start taking my malaria pills (I was supposed to take one a week, starting one month before I leave), I barely have any time next week to pack, my plans for when I come back are still up in the air, and I have a thousand graduation cards to make and gifts to buy. Who knew post-graduation would be so stressful?

I still have little dents in my head from the turqoise head band I bought yesterday, and yet I totally plan on wearing it again and again. I'm clearly becoming a masochist.

I wish I could learn to like what's available and easy, rather than always going after what's difficult. I think I'm making progress, though, because I just really want this to work out.

I leave for Costa Rica in 20 days. There are 2 days of high school left. I think I'm going crazy out of excitement and depression.

A Converse outlet store opening in Wrentham pretty much made my life. I went on Sunday and picked up some of the sweetest shoes ever for my nephew. This shopping trip also resulted in me buying another pair of shoes that I don't need, instead of shoes for prom.
Who wants to go barefoot to prom with me? Because really, I just can't trust myself to go shoe shopping ever again.

I don't think I have ever had so much work due in one week, and this is my last two weeks of high school. Something is definitely not right.

Come on darling, I've something in mind

May. 14th, 2006 | 08:28 pm
i'm listening to: anti-western, camera obscura

I have fallen so far behind in the wallet making. I'm sorry if you've been waiting: I promise I'll have more time after next weekend!

Today I helped Deb move out of Brandeis, and then we drove to Temple Emanuel to donate blood. And I was rejected again. Apparently I'm too anemic to ever donate blood.
Then we made an incredible Mother's Day dinner with absolutely no screw ups, which is like setting some kind of insane record for us. We ended up making risotto alla primavera with jicama mango salad.  Somehow this required driving to 3 different super markets to find risotto rice, and then I almost died coming out of Whole Foods. It was a good time!

Four day weekends are my favorite. Tomorrow I'm driving into Providence for senior skip day, and Tuesday I'm spending the day in NY for Matt's graduation from Columbia. My goal is to return the dress that does not fit (since I ordered it in two sizes), find shoes to match, and buy something to wear to Matt's ceremony.

Edit:  My prom dress just came in the mail. It's beautiful, and definitely formal enough, and it fits, and I'm just so in love!

Prom dress shopping was unsuccessful. I'm going to Newbury St. next weekend, and if that doesn't work out, I'll just wear the dress I ordered that might not fit and will probably be too informal anyway. I am SO close to just showing up in sweatpants.

This weekend, on the other hand, was really good - Westport was beautiful. I studied a ridiculous amount of psych, watched Billy Elliott, had my shoe eaten by LukeRufus, almost crashed a little league game, and listened to an insane amount of Sondre Lerche.

Daniel's soccer game was great fun, barring the creepy stares I got when other parents saw me with Daniel and assumed I was his mother. Watching a crowd of  three-year-olds all chase after the same ball was hilarious, though. So Adorable.

My freshman letter was kind of disappointing. I basically just listed my closest friends, explained how much I loved punk rock (I'm so embarrassed for myself!) and talked about how I hoped I would be taking a ton of APs and going to a great college.

But my favorite part of the letter was this:
"Deb wanted me to add that I hope she goes to Mass Bay Community College when she graduates, so that we can still ride our bikes to school together every day!"
I suppose Brandeis wasn't all that far off?

I couldn't decide who I wanted to win Senior Cup, so I didn't vote at all, which I kind of regret now. On the weird side, I got two votes from the most random people ever.

Vassar Open House

Apr. 23rd, 2006 | 08:37 pm
i'm feeling: exhaustedexhausted
i'm listening to: No Illusions, 78 Saab

Visiting Vassar today felt so totally different from my last visit. In September I tried really hard not to get attached, because in truth I was terrified that I wouldn't get in. Well, now I am completely and totally attached. And it feels good!
The open house was pretty great. I basically just met up with a bunch of people, ditched the programming (and my parents), and hung out on campus. Everything was perfect, and even though it was pouring rain the entire day, the campus still looked gorgeous. I love it there.
When I was first checking in, I gave my last name to a woman who was giving out name tags, and she said, "Oh, is your first name Abby? I remember reading your application!" And then we launched into a conversation about my college essay. It was crazy!
I met with the director of Vassar's nursury school, and she's awesome. The nursury school was absolutely beautiful; it is one of the very first in the country, and inside there are tons of photographs of kids playing in the school during the 1920s. So cool.
Oh, and I bought a Vassar car sticker and a pair of Vassar flip flops, both of which make me unbelievably happy!

I'm just in a really weird place right now, because I'm torn between wanting to go away as fast as possible, and wanting to stay in highschool forever. Because both options sound so freaking amazing.

Look up, rain is falling, looks like love

Apr. 21st, 2006 | 05:12 pm

I am incredibly sunburnt from spending all of yesterday outside playing baseball with Sam and Daniel. But there's something pretty exciting about the weather finally being warm enough to get a sunburn. Also, I'm driving Daniel to his very first soccer game in two weeks, and I totally can't wait to cheer him on from the sidelines until Mrs. Linder can make it.

I just got home from Brandeis, where I helped Deb protect the campus from drugs, drunks, and other various dangers. Patrol duty is fun, especially when it means watching Goodbye, Lenin and doing art projects.
She helped me put together a photo album for one of the preschoolers (the kids are doing a photography unit next week, so we are all making albums for each kid).

Also, I have some new fabric.
If you'd like a wallet (namely Aliza & Ksusha), tell me if you like either of these! If not, it's cool, because I have to go back to Joann's this week anyway.

+ Magnolia trees
+ My date with a pretty boy
+ Boston Marathon
+ New CDs
--- I still haven't started studying for APs. Smart move, Abby.

This just made my day )

So, I'm going to meet with her (the director of the nursery school) when I go down on the 23rd for the open house and convince her to give me the job (hopefully I can get it, since the people receiving financial aid will obviously have priority). But really, this woman sounds amazing for offering to request me as her advisee. I'm falling in love with Vassar all over again!
This job would make me so happy, because I am seriously not ready to give up the NSHS preschool.

In other news, I discovered that Deb and I should go to vegan restaurants more often. And that I am addicted to Bob's waffle fries.

My big Vassar package finally came, and it made me so unbelievably happy. Like, so happy that I'm still watching the DVD they sent me and trying to figure out where to hang my new poster.
Late arrival + Johnny's + Vassar = Very Happy Abby.

You know what else makes me happy? )

I love when I find a song that is so good that I literally can't stop listening to it.

AU is dumb. I've withdawn my application 3 times, and yet they keep sending me mail. Today they offered me $15,000 per year to go, even though I have told them multiple times that was accepted somewhere else. Now I have to withdraw for the fourth time.

Working in the preschool is incredible. I took pictures for Daniel's photo album! )

Oh, and I bought more fabric this weekend! )

Costa Rica '06 is finally official! Molly and I sent in our applications, and then a few minutes later my mom got a call from the guy running it. She told him about my community service experience in Nicaragua, and he basically assured her that I'd be accepted.
The other amazing news? El Jugador may be able to come see me in Caño Negro, since it's so close to the Nica border.

My JT CD has never gotten this much use. I've missed him!

i'm listening to: James Taylor

This was such a productive weekend. For the first time ever, I actually managed to get everything that I needed to do done.

1. I finished the entire chapter of psych notes + did my Spanish homework for the first time this week
2. I made wallets for Laura and Tamar (which I'll bring to school tomorrow)
3. I worked on planning for the Freedom Seder
4. I brought out all of my warm weather clothing, rearanged my closet, and basically cleaned out my entire room. I figured this deserved pictures, because my room is never this organized. )

I'm also really pissed, because I brought my camera to Sam & Daniel's, took some of the most adorable pictures ever, and then proceded to accidently delete them all. Crap.

For those of you who told me they were interested in the Passover seder with the homeless on April 6th, you can now sign up here. (Just fill in the info at the top and then check off the box labeled Freedom Seder at the bottom). Or just tell me in person so that I can sign you up.

I just blew off my psych reading for Brave New World. I love getting sucked into new books.
I have the urge to eat Indian food and watch Billy Elliot.

I'm going fabric shopping tomorrow, since I only have a couple classes in the morning. I'm planning on picking up some things to make a new camera case (I'm still depressed over the death of my monster camera cozy), but  if you would like me to make you a wallet, speak up now! I also updated this site to add a link to the fabric I have already bought (which at the moment is only enough for one wallet, but if you want it, it's yours!)
